Morse Code and an Elephant Seal
T his week, the kids are still on break before their summer programs start up at school. I loaded them up in the late morning and we headed for the Point Reyes National Seashore, specifically, Drakes Beach.
We pulled into Point Reyes Station and parked at the eastern end by Whale of a Deli, walked the three blocks of downtown (I guess you can call it a downtown) and waited 30 minutes to get a table at Station House Cafe--kids burger with fries, smoked salmon with avocado toast, and halibut and chips. Nothing to get excited about. Sandwiches from the deli may have been a better pick.
Heading up the western side of Tomales Bay in the town of Inverness, we stopped at the wreck of the fishing boat, Point Reyes.
A short drive and we walked the cypress tree tunnel to see the historic KPH radio station.
Yes! Two Instagram famous locations in the same day. Thankfully, I don't have Instagram. I wonder if anybody posting photos in the tree tunnel makes any effort to learn about the building at the end of the driveway or the people who once occupied it. It is infinitely more interesting than anything in some social feed. Check it out here.
Driving to the beach, we saw the herd of elk to the east, too far for the 35mm lens, but their golden tan contrasted beautifully with the browning meadow.
We nearly had the beach all to ourselves, save a lone elephant seal.
A pack of Reese's Pieces on the way home and the kids were happy with the day overall.
P.S. the Birkenstock sunburn wasn't that bad.
