A New Workflow

The Fujifilm Instax Mini arrived in the mail last night. It turned out the Fujifilm X100V (currently) doesn't connect directly to the printer, which was pretty disappointing. You have to wirelessly send the photo from the camera to the Fujifilm app on your phone, then move the photo to the Instax Mini app on your phone, then send it to the printer. A slight hassle, but still enjoyable.

I dropped the kids off at school, stopped at work for a quick meeting, then drove up to the summit of Mt. Diablo. It was 100 degrees, and I sweat through my jeans as I hiked around looking for some photos. The sky was super hazy, and the noon sun was harsh, but I've grown to be content with the midday sun since that's often all I can get while the kids are in school. If I waited for the best light, I would never take any photos.

I am enjoying the evolution of my workflow. Years of editing in Lightroom, spending more time on the computer than out with a camera, always had the potential to spoil the whole experience. But right now, shooting jpeg with the X100V, I can print a quick snapshot to add to the journal. I can create without ever having to open my laptop.

These are personal photos that document my experiences and observations, and they supplement my daily writing by giving a visual context. With a glue stick or rubber cement, they are posted into the Field Notes notebook that is always in my pocket. Probably, nobody else will ever flip through these notebooks. They're for me to understand myself and remember what it was to be me, inserting myself into the narrative of the stories around me.
